Teaching Glossary

This glossary about teaching was made so people can learn new words about the subject.

Competencies
Noun
An individual's abilities as they relate to knowledge, understanding, and skills; see also minimal competence.
Example: I made exams related to all the competencies in order to evaluate my students.

E-learning
Noun
Learning activities based on any electronic format.
Example: I like to use E-learning for my students, they like it better that way.

Essay
Noun
A short written work on a topic.
Example: My students wrote an essay about their summer.

Grading rubric
Noun
Written explanation clarifying how individuals will be assessed on a given task.
Example: I read the grading rubric before correcting my students' exams.

Mentoring
Can be a verb, noun, or adjective.
Activity of advising and guiding a person through some task.
Example: He was mentoring two boys from 3 to 5 yesterday night. (verb)

Modularization
Noun
Teaching process that splits material or courses into modules to allow students flexibility in selecting modules to create a program of study.
Example: I used modularization to separate everything I need to teach this year.

Practical work
Noun
Activities completed in a course that are intended to show how theories and general knowledge are applied.
Example: I use practical work after talking about a subject with my students so they can apply what we learned.

Psychomotor domain
Noun
The physical aspect or muscular activity of experience or learning.
Example: I use psychomotor domain to make my students move while learning.

Quality assurance
Noun
Internal and external processes for ensuring the quality of an object or institution maintains a desired level.
Example: I made an exercice for my students to assure they kept the quality they had.

Redeemable failure
Noun
Situation in which a student does not meet the necessary level but is still allowed to move to the next level.
Example: I like to use the "redeemable failure" format, so my students can try again when they fail an exam or a test.

Reflective practice
Noun
Practice of engaging in reflection to identify important elements of past events.
Example: We used reflective practice when we talked about 9/11 yesterday.

Rehearsal
Noun
Process of practicing an action or activity in order to perfect it.
Example: Today is the last rehearsal before the final exam.

Remedial teaching
Noun
Education activities aimed at removing deficiencies in knowledge or skills.
Example: I used remedial teaching so students quit their bad habits while doing their homework and exams.

Self assessment
Noun
Assessment completed by the learner him/herself to evaluate his/her own performance, strengths and weaknesses.
Example: My students had a self assessment to do today so I know if they are satisfied with their results.

Sight vocabulary
Noun
Words an individual can identify immediately without decoding.
Example: This word is part of the sight vocabulary of my students; they already know the definition of it.

Standards
Noun
Specified ends of learning all students are expected to attain.
Example: I made a list of all the standards I want my students to achieve.

Surface learning
Noun
Learning that emphasizes the memorization of details (rote learning); contrast with deep learning.
Example: In my history class, we use surface learning, so we tend to memorize more details.

Transfer of learning
Noun
Ability to apply knowledge and skills learned in one area to another context or problem.
Example: When my students use at home the math we learned in class, they are doing a transfer of learning.

Word length
Noun
Total number of words required for an essay, thesis or written report.
Example: The word length for this essay is four hundred words.

Word wall
Noun
A selected collection of words posted on a wall that is arranged in lists or groups to facilitate students familiarity with common sight words.
Example: I have a word wall in my english class so students can refer to it when the forget a word.
